10 Years, 10 Personal Development Lessons

I’ve had an interesting start to January with snow and ice closing the first week back to school for my children. Messages from teachers came through with links to worksheets for us to download and attempts to cajole the children into completing them while working, keeping them entertained, and, of course, fed. Why do they eat so much during home-schooling? It all had a very COVID-esque vibe, which I’m not keen to repeat. While beautiful and fun, the snow wasn’t here to stay; however, it did put me in a reflective mood.

Over the last decade, I’ve been deeply committed to personal development and have condensed my top ten lessons from this journey. These may or may not resonate with you, but I hope they inspire some reflection.

10 Personal Development Lessons

  1. My thoughts are not the truth.
  2. My thoughts and opinions are not less valid than others’.
  3. Other people’s bad behaviour is not my fault.
  4. I’m doing the best I can in any given moment with the resources available to me at that time. So are other people.
  5. Stay in integrity with myself, even in the face of others’ judgments.
  6. Expectations = disappointment. Let go of expectations and embrace the reality of what is.
  7. Forgiveness is a destination, not a process. It happens when I let go of the pain and fully accept what has occurred.
  8. At the heart of most challenges are limiting beliefs or emotional allergies (feelings we’ll do anything to avoid).
  9. There’s always a choice.
  10. Stay open, even when you want to close.

Reflect & Focus

If you had to choose one lesson or insight to focus on, which would it be and why? Alternatively, take a moment to reflect on your own journey. What have you discovered so far about yourself?

For me, the most transformative insight has been to stop believing that I am less valid or worthy than anyone else. When you shift that mindset, everything changes.

As always, my inbox is open. I’m just an email away.

Keep opening up,
Hannah
