From Proving to Proactive: A Career Designed on Your Terms
Stephanie Ma, PhD used to live by the internal mantra: “I’ll be good enough once…” Once the project was perfect. Once the inbox was clear. Once everyone else was happy. But that cycle never ended, because proving yourself is an infinite loop. And no matter how many milestones you hit, it never quite feels like enough.
When Proving Becomes a Pattern
Steph’s story will resonate with many high-achieving STEM women. She wasn’t just performing, she was over-performing. Working late. Taking on more. Carrying invisible pressure, all while making it look effortless on the outside. She’d built a career around external expectations and lost touch with her internal compass. That’s the cost of a proving mindset. It chips away at your confidence, capacity, and clarity, until you’re left wondering whether it’s you or the system that’s broken. It’s not you.
The Gold Dust in the Unlikely Places
The shift didn’t come from a lightbulb moment at work, it came from her personal life. In month 3 of the Career Design Mastermind, I provide a Talent Dynamics token and debrief to uncover natural talents and roles that will align to those strengths. I then ask participants to look for moments of flow states for the next 10 days in all domains of life. Steph started noticing patterns in her hobbies and relationships. In how she approached creative tasks. In how she supported friends. These moments held gold dust clues about her natural strengths, things like empathy, strategy, and a love for structured growth.
When we’re stuck in overwork mode, we often overlook the data right in front of us. But when you start tuning into it, its power becomes clear. It can shape a career path that fits, not just on paper, but in real life.
One Hour a Week, That’s All It Takes
What changed everything for Steph wasn’t a sabbatical, a new job title, or a grand plan. It was a commitment: one hour a week.
That’s all she needed to:
- Reflect with intention
- Reclaim her voice
- Realign her career with her values and wellbeing
Through the Career Design Mastermind, she moved from overworking to owning her direction. From pleasing to planning. From burnout to boundaries.
And not just professionally, this shift rippled through every area of her life. Listen to Steph’s story on the Women in STEM Career & Confidence podcast 🎧 iTunes │ 🎧 Spotify
A Thought to Leave You With
Proving says: “Let me show you I’m worthy.” Proactive says: “I already am, I can trust myself to choose.”
You are not the sum of what you solve.
You are not the architect of others’ ease so you can finally deserve your own.
You are not a vessel of value only when poured out.
You are the one who learned to disappear by being everything.
And now, slowly, sacredly, you are reappearing.
Not by doing less. But by letting the one who needed nothing to prove, finally be enough.
The striving has spoken.
Now it’s time to speak back.
