“How Are You?” And Other Loaded Questions

How are you?

A simple, everyday question. One we ask without thinking. One we answer without pausing. But let’s be honest, how often is it really answered with truth?

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Great, thanks, you?”

Smiles. Deflection. Change the subject. Move on.

But what if you’re not fine? What if the truth is: I’m tired. Flat. Frustrated. Hopeful but scared. What if answering “fine” is the very thing that nudges you further away from yourself?

Why We Default to “Fine”

We default because it’s socially safe and we’ve been conditioned to preserve harmony. We default because it’s easier than risking vulnerability in a world that doesn’t always know what to do with it.

But here’s the cost: Every time we override our internal truth to preserve external ease, we chip away at our authenticity. And authenticity is the foundation of sustainable success, real connection, and inner alignment.

The Micro-Moment of Misalignment

When you say you’re fine but you’re not, it creates a dissonance between your words and your reality. It may seem harmless, but over time this builds internal noise. You stop trusting your inner signals. You disconnect from your own experience. And if we want to live, lead, and show up as our true and authentic selves, this is a disconnection we can’t afford.

Authenticity Comes Down to Three Things:

1. Be honest with your words

You don’t have to spill everything to everyone, but you cantell the truth. Try:

  • “I’ve had easier weeks, but I’m managing.”
  • “Honestly, I’m a bit wobbly today.”
  • “Thanks for asking, today feels full on.”

Your honesty might give someone else permission to be honest too.

2. Be real with your emotions

Being real doesn’t mean being dramatic, it means being in contact with how you actually feel. It might be messy, contradictory, complex. That’s okay. Naming an emotion brings it out of the nervous system and into the light of awareness. When we deny emotion, we deny a part of ourselves.

3. Be connected to self, source, and others

Authenticity isn’t an individual performance, it’s a relational act. When you’re connected to yourself (your values, energy, and truth), you can show up without shape-shifting. When you’re connected to source (however you define it: intuition, quantum physics, nature, wisdom), you’re guided from within. When you’re connected to others (the right others), you don’t have to prove anything to belong.

  • ☕ What does it feel like when I’m fully connected to myself and how can I return there more often?

A Thought to Leave You With

You don’t owe the world a polished version of you. You owe yourself a relationship rooted in truth. Even if the truth is: “I don’t quite know how I am today.” That is a valid answer. Because when you meet yourself honestly, you come back into integrity with yourself.

So my question for you today is…how are you, really? Hit reply and let me know.

As always, I’m just an email away, whether you’re finding your voice again, navigating change, or making the shift from doer to leader.

Keep opening up,
