The Mute Flappy Bird

Two years ago, I signed up to become a One of Many Trainer but due to covid-19 the practical 5-day intensive was postponed until last week. I believe it is so important for all those working in coaching to continue to be coached and undergo personal and professional development training. This training in particular was very confronting. Let me start at the beginning…

When I was 6 years old, I was cast as the white princess in the school play. I remember in one of the rehearsals standing there not knowing what they were asking me to do. I overheard one of the teachers saying, “I thought she was going to be good at this because she does all that dancing.”

The next year, I was cast as a bird that came on stage for 90 seconds flapping her wings running round a nest of eggs then off the stage. I was so ashamed that I had gone from leading lady to a mute flappy bird. The connections I made in my brain were, you can dance and perform but you cannot speak on stage; a rule I continued to abide by until 2019.

I have written previously in Chemistry World about being in The Capability Trap. At the time (2015), I was a Scientific Project Manager and my Talent Dynamics personality profile came back as a ‘Trader’ because I had answered the questions against my current role rather than if I had a choice. The person debriefing my profile asked me to identify myself and immediately I picked the ‘Star’ but she said, “I’ve not observed that in you.” This compounded the disowning of that part of me.

I have never felt more alive than I did last week during the speaker training and that really highlights stepping fully into your natural talents and capabilities (one of the five components of your value). I have well and truly reclaimed my ‘Star’ and with that, a realignment of the expression of my purpose. Often, when we have a profound moment like this, The Universe sends a test. I returned to work on Monday to find an invitation in my inbox to fly me out to Washington DC to lead a 2-day future leaders forum!

What does this mean for 2022?

Integrating the ‘Star’ into my long-term vision plan and mapping it back to 5-year, 3-year and 1-year milestones has rewritten my future and I couldn’t be more excited for the year ahead.
