The Hidden Blind Spots of Your Genius
Last weekend I spent three energising hours with past 1:1 and Career Design Mastermind clients in an advanced workshop titled: Align & Refine.
This workshop was a joy to design. I was fully in my genius zone, creativity flowing, ideas sparking, strategy humming. I felt aligned, fulfilled, on purpose.
But… I was also squarely confronted by a major blind spot in my Talent Dynamics (personality) profile.
The Blind Spot That Bit Me
As someone with a strong Dynamo frequency, I’m naturally visionary, full of ideas, and energised by creation. But I also have a well-documented shadow: over-optimism about what can be achieved in a given timeframe.
While the workshop was powerful, it was a lot. I’d underestimated how much could realistically be covered in three hours and had basically written a one- or two-day event! It was a classic Dynamo blind spot, initiating with enthusiasm but not grounding it in timelines or logistics.
That moment reminded me of something important:
Shame says, “I should’ve known better.” Growth says, “Now I do.”
This is exactly why we don’t design intentional careers by focusing solely on our weaknesses.
The old paradigm says: “Fix your flaws.” The new paradigm? Leverage your strengths, and know your blind spots.
Why Blind Spots Matter
Each Talent Dynamics profile has areas of brilliance, and predictable shadows that can quietly trip us up:
- Dynamo profiles may miss details, underestimate time, or jump to the next idea too soon.
- Blaze profiles may overcommit or neglect follow-through.
- Tempo profiles can resist change and struggle with assertiveness.
- Steel profiles may get stuck in perfectionism, rigidity, or analysis paralysis.
Your blind spots are simply the overuse or misapplication of your strengths. They’re not flaws, they’re invitations. And like any system, they need updating as you grow.
My feedback loop didn’t have a mitigation strategy for my over-optimism. But I do now. I’ll be running my timelines through a quick calibration process, checking them with my superstar Operations Manager Hope Chauland, ACC, MA who grounds me in Tempo energy. Not to clip my creativity, but to anchor it.
Leverage First. Then Calibrate.
In this new paradigm of intentional career design, we don’t shrink to fit old models of “fixing”. Instead, we:
- Discover our natural strengths
- Leverage them to create more joy, value, and fulfilment
- Identify blind spots not with shame, but with curiosity
- Build in support systems that keep us aligned, not burnt out
Because fulfilment doesn’t come from fixing everything. It comes from aligning what’s natural, and evolving with awareness.
Designing with your strengths isn’t just about feeling good. It’s how sustainable leadership is built from the inside out.
The good news is that growth is one of my top values and I’m fully committed to it. Growth isn’t a perfect arc, it’s a practice. And the first step to any behavioural change is awareness.

- ☕ What support system or check-in could help me stay aligned next time?
If you’re spending more than 50% of your time on tasks that don’t excite or energise you, you might be stuck in the Capability Trap, doing something because you’re capable, rather than because it’s a talent.
The Capability Trap is one of three key pivot points on the journey to an Intentional Career. Find out more here.
As always, I’m just an email away. If this resonates and you’re curious what blind spots might be quietly shaping your path, I’d love to hear from you.
Keep opening up,
Hannah
