The Sacred Art of Alone Time

It was no coincidence I bumped into her that evening. Another mum, walking solo under a golden sky, the scent of barbecues thick in the air. We didn’t plan it. We just both happened to need the same thing at the same time:

Space.

Not an escape. Not a rejection. Not a cry for help. Just the quiet kind of space that reminds you, you’re still in here.

This season is beautiful. And full. Summer holidays with children can feel like warmed-up chaos. The calendar overflows with snack requests, half-finished crafts, and the logistics of making everyone else’s memories matter. Work doesn’t pause. Your mind doesn’t either. But rest isn’t the opposite of productivity, it’s the prerequisite for perspective.

And somewhere in that tangle of joy and duty, something starts to fray. Not your love, not your capacity, but your edges.

You start to miss the sound of your own thoughts. You start to ache for a moment where no one needs anything. Not because you don’t adore them, but because you need a moment to return to yourself.

And this is the quiet truth we rarely name:

  • Alone time is not selfish. It is sacred.
  • Overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re full.
  • Evening walks in silence? They are not luxuries. They are recalibrations.

It takes courage to choose quiet over guilt, and to let stillness speak louder than service.

So if you’re snatching moments in parked cars, stretching showers a minute too long, starting to look forward to shopping in the local shop by yourself, you’re not alone. You’re tending the part of you that remembers you are not just a mother, partner, sister, friend, cousin, leader, scientist, musician, artist, athlete… Not just a body to meet other people’s needs. Because when you remember yourself, those you lead, love, and nurture feel it too.

Who are you underneath all the titles? She needs room to echo.

Thought to Leave You With

You don’t need a week away to come home to yourself. Sometimes one honest walk is enough to cross the threshold of return.
