What If I Had One Purpose, Like David Attenborough?
It was David Attenborough’s birthday last week. Imagine being 99 years old. Still writing. Still narrating. Still igniting curiosity and stirring change across the globe.
Still saying:
“The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world.”
That’s Sir David Attenborough. His voice, his message, and his mission have spanned eight decades. And perhaps most striking of all, he has spent his entire life in service to one clear purpose:
🌍 To help us see and protect the natural world.
It may feel like he was born knowing that purpose, but here’s what might surprise you: He didn’t begin with perfect clarity. He stumbled, adapted, pivoted, and learned. Just like we all do.
The Myth of Finding it Early
There’s a lot of pressure, especially in STEM careers, to have it all figured out from the start. Choose the right subject, land the right job, follow the prescribed pathway and stick with it.
But Attenborough’s story offers us something gentler, deeper, and more compassionate: Your purpose doesn’t arrive fully formed. It unfolds.
In fact, he:
- Started in the Navy, not science
- Was rejected for an on-screen role at the BBC (they didn’t like his teeth!)
- Studied anthropology, not zoology
- Didn’t release his first major documentary until his forties
And yet, every step shaped his path, because his internal compass, a love of nature, learning, and storytelling, was always active.
5 Lessons in Purpose Longevity
What makes his career not just successful, but sustainable?
- He allowed purpose to evolve. He didn’t wait for perfect clarity, he just took the next intentional step.
- He stayed curious. Even now, he embraces new technologies and fresh ways to tell important stories.
- He honoured who he is. Quiet. Thoughtful. Deliberate. No need for showmanship to lead a movement.
- He didn’t chase titles – he built trust. He kept doing meaningful work, not just visible work.
- He made it about mission, not ego Legacy, for him, is a collective endeavour – not a personal trophy.
What This Means For You
If you’re asking:
“What if I’ve missed the boat?”
“What if it’s too late to start over?”
“What if I’ll never find the right path?”
Let David’s story reassure you: You are not behind. You are exactly where you need to be to take your next intentional step.
Whether you’re in the rediscovery phase after a career break, navigating imposter syndrome in middle management, or simply feeling disconnected from work that once lit you up – your purpose hasn’t left you.
It may just need rediscovering, refining, or re-anchoring.
When your work is aligned with who you are and what matters most, it doesn’t burn you out, it energises you. Not for a few years. But for a lifetime.
